Actually I own both of them, but I will tell you why I own a desktop and loving it :
1. I can easily upgrade the components whenever I have money for it :) Imagine trying to install a decent graphics card in a laptop. (Let alone a sound card for better sound).
2. It is ridiculous to compare a laptop processor and a desktop processor even if they are of the same manufacturer and clock speed, the desktop processor will always win especially in gaming. Because, the laptop processor is designed to save to use minimal power. Moreover, you can always overclock the desktop processor to even get more performance out of it.
3. Laptops can never really be run more than 7 hours with constant use ... because of one reason ... overheating. You can run desktops as long as you have the reason to use it continually.
Those are my points for owning a desktop. My point for owning a laptop is portability ... to carry my work home and to work while on the move. A laptop will never replace a desktop and vice versa, they have their own uses, they will coexist.

You can get laptops these days that are more powerful than almost any desktop that the average, or above-average user has (dual video, load of RAM, fast multi-core CPUs, etc.)

Three advantages of desktops:

1) More room for more cards and drives. A laptop pretty much has what it has. Some have replaceable video, CPU, etc., but most don't. And none have a few slots to add cards. Some have 2 drive slots, but desktops have more.

2) A desktop stays cooler, and heat kills electronics. Even with a "laptop chiller", the interior of a laptop is hotter than the interior of a desktop.

3) The power jack on a desktop (it has none) doesn't break free from the motherboard.

One advantage of a laptop - portability.

I own a few of each.

Desktops have several advantages over laptops:

1- No battery. Even when plugged into an outlet, a laptop's power is coming from the battery. If the battery is entirely defunct than the laptop may not function even when plugged in. This goes back to the old engineering addage "the more parts there are, the more there is to go wrong."
2- Laptops are harder to service/upgrade. Space, heat, and power consumption are all critical factors in a laptop. Most (98%) of desktops can upgrade a video card with no problem in any of the aforementioned 3 areas. Simply because a laptop is compatible with a graphics card does not mean that it will cool the card efficiently enough for reliable operation.
3- Cost! Desktops offer more computing power at a lower cost. This is due to several factors including space, power consumption, cooling capacity, and ease of design. Laptops are also constructed to a higher standard because it is likely that they will be moving around while turned on. Desktops do not require this as most people set it on their desk and never move it unless it needs service.
4- More ports and drives. Desktops come with a DVD/CD drive as a standard and many will come with a second one so you can copy discs easily. Most desktops will have at least 2 USB ports in the front and anywhere from 2-8 in the back. Laptops come with a single disc drive (if it comes with one at all). In addition, laptops will typically have 2-4 USB ports total.
5- Screen quality. With a laptop, the screen attached to the computer is likely the only one you will ever use. While you can attach a monitor, most people don't do this. Desktop screens are not constrained by the stringent power requirements of a laptop and usually offer higher resolutions, more HD capable models, lower prices, and better response times (which reduces the "ghost" effect).

For me a desktop has more room for expansion you cant add and extra DVD drive/Hard drives or multiple graphic cards, to a notebook. Also if your good with computers you can keep your computer case and other hardware and just replace the motherboard.(cheaper then a laptop) Thats why I like desktops. But yes i love my laptop aswell, great to carry around.

Because a laptop gets outdated in a year or 2 and you normally cant upgrade a laptop as you can a desktop

1. desktops can be upgraded like graphic card hard drive and ram etc

2.while laptops mostly you can only upgrade the ram

so many people actually prefer desktops to laptops cause they last longer than anticipated
Note: laptops are great for business while desktops not that much depend on what and for what your buying

Not only are desktops more powerful, but they also tend to have a much longer life expectancy than laptops. Laptops are prone to breaking when they've been dropped or handled roughly. In addition, laptops are less upgradable than desktops, more prone to overheating, and have far more power issues (i.e. the cable having to be jiggled JUST RIGHT to charge the battery).

Desktop P.C's ALWAYS have better processors and RAM and pretty much everything else for your money. Plus with the laptops your also buying a screen.

You say not much of a difference with CPU's ? For your money Desktop's are always more powerful buy a large margin.

This is the same with RAM as it is half the price on Desktops

It basically all comes down to the amount of space it takes up and the less it takes up the smaller the technology has to be ( plus cooling ) and therefore costs more to develop/make :D

Hope I helped :)
